A carpet is the only thing in a room you touch with bare feet every single day. That makes how it feels underfoot a specification rather than an afterthought.

Pile height and material do most of the work. A dense low pile in wool wears evenly and suits a hallway or dining room. A deeper pile is softer but shows footprints, so it belongs in a bedroom or a reading corner. Jute and cotton are cooler underfoot, which matters more in an Indian summer than most buying guides admit.
